Helen M. (Piteau) Tackett

WESTBROOK – Helen M. (Piteau) Tackett, 82, passed away on May 19, 2024.

Born on Aug. 31, 1941, in Portland, Helen was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Curran) Piteau Sr.

Helen graduated from Cathedral Grammar and High School in 1955 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors from Providence College in 1984. She worked her way up at the New England Telephone Company, also known as NYNEX, ultimately becoming an executive assistant. Helen retired in 1994 after a distinguished career.

In 1966, Helen married Walter “Bud” Tackett, who predeceased her. Together, they enjoyed many years of travel, visiting destinations such as Russia, Great Britain, Mexico, New Zealand, as well as various locations across the United States, including California and New Mexico.

She loved figurine angels and had a wide collection of them in her home. Christmas was her favorite holiday to celebrate with her family.

Helen was an integral part of the team that created slides for the “Centrex Week” presentation at the World Trade Center in 1986. She found a passion for teaching, particularly working with children with disabilities at Hoyle Elementary, where she went the extra mile to care for her students outside the classroom.

A woman of faith and service, Helen was always ready to help others. She served on the Board of Selectmen from 2016 until 2020 and was an elected official and a clerk. Helen also ran for a seat on the Community Preservation Committee and won in March of 2013. She was integral part of Friends of the Beach in Swansea, Mass. In her retirement, Helen enjoyed organizing fundraiser golf tournaments for multiple charities with her twin sister. She was a member of the Touisset Country Club with Bud and played on the woman’s league.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Walter “Bud” Tackett.

She is survived by her twin sister, Barbara Dalton, a brother, Arthur J. Piteau Jr.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen’s family would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Walker Fuenral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday, May 30, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland.
