BASEBALL
Adael Amador, Zach Kokoska and Bladimir Restituyo homered in the first inning off CJ Liu, starting the Hartford Yard Goats on their way to an 8-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in an Eastern League game Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.
Marcelo Mayer hit his fifth home run of the season for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the first, and Matthew Lugo had a two-run double in the fourth.
GOLF
NCAA: Cole Anderson of Camden shot a 1-over 73 for the second straight day, helping his Florida State team stay well above the third-round cutline at the NCAA championship in Carlsbad, California.
Anderson was tied for 34th place at 5 over, and Florida State was in fourth place. The top 15 teams advance to Monday’s fourth round, and the top eight after the fourth round move on to match play.
PGA: Grayson Murray’s parents said Sunday their 30-year-old son took his own life, just one day after he withdrew from a PGA Tour event. The family asked for privacy and that people honor Murray by being kind to one another.
Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, spoke in January after winning the Sony Open in Honolulu about turning the corner in his life, his golf, and battles with alcoholism and mental health. He died Saturday morning.
• Davis Riley shot even-par 70 to win the Charles Schwab Challenge by five strokes over Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley for his first individual victory on the PGA Tour.
Riley finished at 14-under 266. Bradley had a closing 67, and Scheffler shot 71 on a day when he hit only seven of 14 fairways and didn’t have a birdie until the 13th hole.
The 27-year-old Riley’s only other PGA Tour win came when he and Nick Hardy won the Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans last year.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Richard Bland won the Senior PGA Championship in his senior major debut, closing with an 8-under 63 for a three-shot victory over Greg Chalmers at Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Bland, a member of LIV Golf, finished at 17-under 267.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Nacho Elvira of Spain parred his final seven holes to hold on for a one-stroke victory at the Soudal Open in Antwerp, Belgium, earning his first victory in three years.
Elvira closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 18 under.
Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard had a birdie putt from about 12 feet at No. 18 to force a playoff, but missed it and had to settle for a 68 and a tie for second place with home favorite Thomas Pieters (66) and Romain Langasque (68).
HOCKEY
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak broke a scoreless deadlock with 10:47 remaining as the Czech Republic shut out Switzerland, 2-0 to win the goal medal in Prague.
David Kampf scored into an empty net with 19 seconds to go, clinching the Czechs’ 13th goal medal, but their first since 2010.
• Carl Grundstrom scored twice as Sweden rallied for a 4-2 victory over Canada in the bronze-medal match.
AUTO RACING
FORMULA ONE: Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position for his first victory in nearly two years.
Leclerc finished about 8 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and 9 seconds clear of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr.
Championship leader Max Verstappen started and finished the race sixth for Red Bull, whose other driver, Sergio Perez, went out of the race after a big first-lap crash.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Kelly McBride didn’t miss a shot until the fourth quarter and scored 31 points to lead the visiting Minnesota Lynx to a 92-79 win over the Atlanta Dream.
McBride made her first nine shots and finished 10 of 12 overall and 6 of 7 from 3-point range.
CYCLING
GIRO D’ITALIA: Tadej Pogacar affirmed his overall triumph with the race’s biggest victory margin in nearly six decades – earning another Grand Tour trophy to go with his two Tour de France titles.
Pogacar crossed safely in the main pack behind stage winner Tim Merlier to conclude the mostly ceremonial final stage of the three-week race, ending with an advantage of 9 minutes, 56 seconds over Daniel Martinez.
