Claw Down competition

Claw Down, the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce’s annual lobster-bite competition, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Ocean Point Marina.

The event was created to focus attention on the Maine lobster industry and showcase the talents and culinary expertise of local chefs.

Attendees get a chance to sample chefs’ offerings along with a selection of beers and wines from craft brewers and vintners.

Chili, chowder contest set

The eighth annual Chili, Chowda & Apple Dessert Contest, sponsored by the Waterborough Historical Society, will be held Saturday at the Grange Hall, 31 West Road.

The judging starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by public taste-testing at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded in all three categories at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $8, $3 for children ages 5-12; free for younger children.

To support the Society and enter a favorite dish at no charge, local cooks, both professional and amateur, are invited to participate. Contest food will be accepted between 4 and 4:30. Chilis and chowdas need to arrive hot in crock pots.

Heritage Day Saturday

The fourth annual Heritage Day will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the North Chapel Common at Alfred and Limerick roads, Route 111.

Events will include spinning wool, quill pen writing, wagon rides and working old engine demos. There will be food, music, local vendors, canning information, a wellness tent, beanhole beans, a pie baking contest and a “reminisce tent” of historical displays and artifacts.

Friday gaming sessions

Teen gaming sessions will be offered from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Friday through September at the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St.

Video games can be played on a projector screen. Wii gaming console, controllers and games will be provided. Role-playing games, table-top games and personal device games are also welcome. This event will be held in Hank’s Room and is open to grades 6-12.

Historical Society pie sale

The New Gloucester Historical Society is taking advance orders for its annual apple pie sale, with pies to be baked by Friends of the Society.

Baked or unbaked pies will be available for pick-up from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at the First Congregational Church, 19 Gloucester Hill Road.

Mount A TrailFest Sunday

The Mount Agamenticus second annual Mount A TrailFest will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday during the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.

The event will feature a trail-run fundraiser celebrating trails, music, the outdoors and Mount A.

In addition to the 9-miler, 5K and fun run, the new “Big A Universal Access Trail” will be officially unveiled.

There will be guided walks, nature programs, a climbing wall, raffle prizes, live music, food, vendors and outdoor demonstrations.

Trail races begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

Parking will be limited. Free shuttles will be available, starting at 8 a.m. at the York County Court House.

Family field day Saturday

The Lake Region Ecumenical Group, headed by the Rev. Craig Hacker of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, will sponsor a free family field day beginning at noon Saturday at Harmon Field, behind Food City.

Sluggo, the Portland Sea Dogs mascot, will make an appearance and play kickball with the children. A free lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, cookies, fruit and water will be available.

Talk on Morse family set

The Thomaston Historical Society will hold a talk on the late Roger Morse and the three generations of the Morse family boat builders at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Attendees who knew Morse are welcome to share stories about him or the boats he and his family built.

The program will take place at the Thomaston Historical Society at the foot of Knox Street. Refreshments will be served. This event is free, but donations are always welcome.
