Greely’s McDevitt, Gorham’s Esposito win Mr. and Miss Basketball awards
Matt McDevitt of Greely received the Mr. Maine Basketball award and Emily Esposito of Gorham was honored as Miss Maine Basketball at the senior all-star banquet Friday night in Bangor.
McDevitt, a 6-foot-7 forward, led Greely to an undefeated season in Class A and its first boys’ basketball state championship since 1998.
Esposito, a 5-10 guard who is headed to Villanova University, was the leader of a Gorham team that won back-to-back Class AA titles, going 21-0 both seasons.
GOLF
PGA: Adam Hadwin started the back nine with five straight birdies and posted a 7-under 64 to build a one-shot lead going into the weekend of the Valspar Championship at Palm Harbor, Florida. Hadwin was at 10-under 132, one shot ahead of Jim Herman.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Defending champion S.S.P. Chawrasia shot a 5-under 67 in the second round of the Indian Open to take a one-stroke lead at the rain-affected event in New Delhi.
Chawrasia was at 5-under 139 total, one shot ahead of David Horsey (74).
SOCCER
MLS: The season-opening match Saturday between the New England Revolution and Orlando City was postponed because of a forecast of cold temperatures and gusty winds in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The game has been rescheduled for Sept. 2.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: American standout Mikaela Shiffrin used a strong burst near the finish to win a giant slalom race as the World Cup returned to Squaw Valley for the first time since 1969.
Shiffrin finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 16.42 seconds at Olympic Valley, California, eclipsing Federica Brignone of Italy by 0.07 seconds. Tessa Worley of France was third, 0.86 seconds back.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Brad Keselowski will begin his bid for a third victory in the last four NASCAR Cup races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway from the pole after topping qualifying.
Keselowski, who also won last week’s race in Atlanta, made up ground in the final two turns and posted a top seed of 193.68 mph in his No. 2 Ford for his 13th career pole. He won at the 1.5-mile track last year and in 2014.
