The New England Patriots and cornerback Darrelle Revis could be preparing for a reunion.

Revis, who played for the Patriots during the 2014 season, looks “increasingly likely” to return to the Patriots for the 2017 season, according to numerous sources.

The 31-year-old, 11-year veteran’s performance saw a noticeable decline in 2016 and he was released by the New York Jets.

However, one NFL personnel man said he was convinced there is still planty of game left after evaluating Revis.

“We did our work on him. He can still play. He can cover. He doesn’t have that long speed anymore; he’s not going to cover a No. 1 receiver deep. But he can cover in tight spaces and he has great instincts. The film is not as bad as some would have you believe. He’s a perfect fit in that quarters scheme Belichick runs, and they have the kind of safeties who can help him out, too. We’re convinced he’s going back to New England. It just makes too much sense.”

The Patriots need help at cornerback. Malcolm Butler is reportedly in negotiations with the New Orleans Saints and he’s likely to be traded to Saints. Logan Ryan signed a free agent deal with the Tennessee Titans.

The Patriots signed former Buffalo Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore, but they still will likely need a second starting cornerback.

Revis won’t be associated with “Revis Island” any longer, but at least one NFL personnel man says he’s still possesses enough quality to be a solid cornerback.
