Fightin Phils sweep Sea Dogs in doubleheader

Kyle Martin hit a towering two-run homer to highlight a three-run second inning as the Reading Fightin Phils topped the Portland Sea Dogs 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania.

In the second game, Reading’s Andrew Pullin homered in the bottom of the 13th for a 4-3 walkoff win. For Portland, Danny Mars had three hits and Mike Olt added a solo homer.

In the opener, Jeremy Barfield had a solo homer in the top of the inning to give Portland an early lead.

The Fightin’ Phils added a pair of runs in the fourth on solo homers by Jiandido Tromp and Mitch Walding. Tromp added another solo shot in the sixth.

Trey Ball suffered the loss for the Sea Dogs, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out four in 51/3 innings.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd remains sidelined indefinitely, due to complications from surgery on his right knee done last September.

The painfully slow recovery process has raised questions about the viability of his career, and the Vikings have taken obvious steps this offseason toward a long-term replacement plan for their first of three first-round draft picks in 2013.

• Mike Tirico is replacing Al Michaels as the play-by-play announcer for Thursday night games this season.

The NFL needed to approve the switch because its contract with the network calls for the top broadcast team to do Thursday games. NBC has those games from Nov. 9 through the end of the year after CBS handles the first portion of the schedule.

• Tennessee backup quarterback Matt Cassel will have surgery to put a pin in his right thumb after being hurt during the Titans’ offseason program.

Cassel was hurt Tuesday during the Titans’ closed organized team activity session.

• Cleveland Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett continues to be slowed by an unspecified injury.

The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft wasn’t on the field Wednesday as his teammates worked out. Garrett was with a group of other injured players, who worked with trainers on the side.

The 6-foot-4, 272-pound Garrett was slowed by an ankle injury during part of his junior season at Texas A&M.

MLS: Xavier Kouassi scored his first MLS goal in the 86th minute as the visiting New England Revolution tied New York City FC 2-2.

It was the first time this season New York City (6-6-2) has allowed a goal in the final 15 minutes.

Both goals by New England (4-6-4) came on headers. In the 24th minute, Kei Kamara headed in Lee Nguyen’s corner kick to tie it at 1. On Kouassi’s goal, Kelyn Rowe chipped it across the goal to find Kouassi at the back post.

COLLEGES

MEN’S GOLF: Brad Dalke held off Sulman Raza to give Oklahoma its second NCAA golf championship, 3-1-1 over defending champion Oregon at Sugar Grove, Illinois.

AUTO RACING

STOCK CARS: Vermont’s stock car racing governor said Wednesday he’s undeterred by a minor crash he suffered during his first race of the season at the Thunder Road speedway over the holiday weekend and hopes to get back on the track soon, once his car is repaired.

Republican Gov. Phil Scott was in second place as the Memorial Day Classic at the Barre track was nearing its end when his car had a problem with its right-front tire, causing him to spin out into the middle of the racetrack.

He completed 96 of the 100 laps and finished 19th out of 29 drivers.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Elena Delle Donne broke a tie with a three-point play with 44 seconds left as host Washington (5-2) rallied to beat Connecticut, 78-76.

• Tiffany Hayes scored 16 points to help host Atlanta beat San Antonio, 77-70.
