UCLA fires Jim Mora late in his sixth season

UCLA fired football coach Jim Mora on Sunday with one regular-season game left in his sixth season.

Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced the shocking move one day after rival Southern California’s 28-23 victory over UCLA (5-6, 3-5 Pac-12).

AP TOP 25: The top nine teams in The Associated Press poll have held onto their spots, led by No. 1 Alabama, while Northwestern and Boise State moved into the Top 25 for the first time this season.

A Saturday with few surprises and a lot of blowouts produced mostly expected ranking results heading into what figures to be an intriguing final two weeks of the season.

Alabama, top ranked since the preseason, received 58 first-place votes on Sunday. No. 2 Miami received three first-place votes.

FCS: The University of New Hampshire will play in the NCAA Division I FCS tournament for the 14th straight season.

The Wildcats, who finished 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Conference, earned an at-large bid into the tournament and will host Central Connecticut State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Wildcats tournament run appeared to be over when they lost their regular-season finale 15-0 to Albany.

GOLF

PGA: Tour rookie Austin Cook won the RSM Classic without being seriously challenged, closing with two birdies for a 3-under 67 and a four-shot victory, in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The victory in the final PGA Tour event of the calendar year gives Cook a spot in the Masters next year.

LPGA: Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand won the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida with birdies on her last two holes and some big help on a short miss by Lexi Thompson.

Thompson had a one-shot lead when she missed a 2-foot par putt on the 18th hole.

That dropped her into a three-way tie, and then Jutanugarn holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Tommy Fleetwood was crowned the European Tour’s Race to Dubai champion in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after a spectacular collapse on the back nine by his nearest challenger, Justin Rose.

The season-ending tournament was won by Spain’s Jon Rahm, who fired a final-round 67 for a 19 under total of 269.

TENNIS

ATP FINALS: Grigor Dimitrov claimed the biggest title of his career at the ATP Finals in London, defeating David Goffin of Belgium 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

FOOTBALL

CFL: Cody Fajardo scored on a 1-yard run with 23 seconds left and the Toronto Argonauts advanced to the Grey Cup, beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 25-21 in Toronto in the East Division final.

Bo Levi Mitchell threw two touchdown passes and the Calgary Stampeders earned a chance at Grey Cup redemption with a 32-28 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Division final in Calgary, Alberta.

Calgary will face Toronto in the title game next Sunday in Ottawa.

PREP SCHOOL

BOYS’ SOCCER: Jed Danforth scores as Hyde beat Lexington Christian Academy 1-0 to win the New England Prep School Athletic Conference Class D title Sunday.
