Bowdoin College senior guard Kate Kerrigan has been named the national Division III Player of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Kerrigan has been a Bowdoin leader for years. She already has been named Player of the Year for her conference (NESCAC), in New England and in the Northeast. She was also the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year for the third time.
Bowdoin (28-2) plays Wartbrug (31-0) of Waverly, Iowa, in a national semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Rochester, Minnesota. The winner will play for the NCAA D-III championship Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
Kerrigan is the second Bowdoin player to earn national Player of the Year honors. Forward Eileen Flaherty won the award in 2007.
This season, Kerrigan leads the Polar Bears in points per game (10.7), rebounds (6.8), assists (4.0) and steals (2.6). She is the only player in Bowdoin history with more than 900 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals. She needs seven points Friday night to reach 1,000.
