BOWLING

Dick Allen of Columbia, South Carolina, won his fifth career Pro Bowlers Association title Wednesday in the Port Property Management Xtra Frame Maine Shootout at Bayside Bowl.

Allen, 39, defeated John Furey, 39, of Howell, New Jersey, in the best-of-three title match – 269-226 and 247-235.

After an open first frame, Allen ran off a string of strikes to take the lead into the final two frames. Furey had a chance to win if he could throw two strikes and a good count in his 10th frame, but he left the 3-6-10 on his first shot in the 10th.

Allen reached the final by defeating Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Oxford, Florida, with a 279-247 victory after they split their first two games.

Furey swept Jason Belmonte of Australia in the other semifinal, 254-248 and 244-226.
