Patrick Kane scored two goals for the second straight game and added an assist to lead the United States to a 9-3 victory over Norway for its sixth straight win at the hockey world championships Sunday in Herning, Denmark.
TENNIS
MADRID OPEN: Second-seeded Alexander Zverev eased past fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4 to win his second title in a week.
ITALIAN OPEN: Playing his first match since February after left knee surgery, Stan Wawrinka lost 6-4, 6-4 to 55th-ranked Steve Johnson in the first round in Rome.
FOOTBALL
KNOX DIES: Chuck Knox, the former NFL coach who took the Los Angeles Rams to three straight NFC championship games, died Saturday night at age 86.
Knox was NFL coach of the year in 1973, 1980 and 1984. He went 186-147-1 over 22 seasons with the Rams, Seahawks and Bills and won five straight NFC West titles from 1973-77.
ROAD RACING
MAINE COAST MARATHON: Derrick Hamel of Newmarket, New Hampshire, finished more than 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the field to win the 26.2 mile race from Kennebunk to Biddeford, and Tracy Deeter of Unionville, Connecticut, placed first in the women’s division.
Hamel, 34, finished in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 17 seconds. Christopher Tattoo, 30, of Boston was second in 2:39:16.
Dexter, 39, posted a time of 2:58:34. Caroline Turner, 23, of Kennebunk edged Allison Konderwich, 28, of Valatie, New York, for second place with a time of 3:00:27.
MOTHER’S DAY 5K: Braden Perry, 25, of Biddeford and Erica Jesseman, 29, of Scarborough paced a field of 1,399 at the Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5K.
Perry, a 2017 graduate of Weber State University, finished in 15 minutes, 41 seconds — 11 seconds ahead of two-time defending champ Chris Harmon, 30, of Portland.
Jesseman took the women’s title for the sixth time in seven years. Her time of 17:34 was 30 seconds faster than runner-up Christina Berkow, 29, of Portland.
AUTO RACING
OXFORD PLAINS: Justin Drake of Burnham held off challenges from Scott Robbins of Dixfield and Derek Griffith of Hudson, New Hampshire, to win the 50-lap Super Late Model feature Saturday night.
FORMULA ONE: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton easily won the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona for his second straight victory, increasing his championship lead over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Mohamed Salah finished the season as the Premier League’s top scorer after starting Liverpool on its way to a 4-0 win over Brighton that secured a spot in the Champions League.
Salah scored his 32nd goal – a record for a 38-game Premier League season.
SPAIN: Playing without Lionel Messi, Barcelona lost 5-4 in a wild game at Levante, ruining its chance to become the first team to finish a Spanish league season without a defeat under its current format.
ITALY: Juventus clinched its record-extending seventh straight title with a 0-0 draw against 10-man Roma.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Joakim Lagergren of Sweden won his first career title, beating Mike Lorenzo-Vera at the Sicilian Open with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
