BOWLING
Pete Couture, a Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and native of Auburn, Maine, died Saturday in his Florida residence at the age of 73 from undetermined medical issues, the PBA said in a release.
Couture won five standard PBA titles during his 24-year career on the tour, then went on to greater success on the PBA’s senior tour, PBA50, winning nine titles. He won rookie of the year honors in 1995 and was voted player of the year in 1998, becoming one of nine players to win both awards.
Couture captured more than 20 state and local titles growing up in Maine and Connecticut. He was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in 2004 and the PBA Hall in 2016.
FOOTBALL
NATIONAL ARENA LEAGUE: Jonathan Bane threw for six touchdowns, including four in the first half, and the Maine Mammoths (3-8) cruised to 55-29 victory over the Carolina Cobras (7-4) at Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday.
Devin Wilson caught three touchdown passes and Desmond Maxwell ran for three scores for the Mammoths, who scored the first 24 points.
BASEBALL
AMERICAN LEGION: Brandon Burnell and Brice Springer each pitched a complete game as Yankee Ford (8-0) collected a doubleheader sweep with 10-2 and 3-2 victories over the Cole Post Eagles (3-6) at Waterboro.
Burnell struck out seven and allowed six hits, while Springer struck out six in a two-hitter.
AUTO RACING
OXFORD PLAINS: Tracy Gordon of Strong moved surged to a victory in the Pro All Stars Series Open 100 at Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday to earn a spot in next month’s Oxford 250.
Gordon made his move on the outside to take the lead on the 84th lap. T.J. Brackett of Buckfield was second, with 15-year-old rookie Austin Teras of Gray in third.
• Kelly Moore of Scarborough collected his first Super Late Model victory, holding off Jeremy Davis of Tamworth, New Hampshire, in Saturday’s 50-lap race.
Billy Childs Jr. of Leeds inched past Gary Babineau of Hollis to win the 30-lap Street Stock race by .064 seconds.
Other winners Saturday were Adam Sanborn of West Paris in the 20-lap Bandits race, Dale Lawrence of Lisbon in the 20-lap Figure 8, Calab Emerson-Mains of New Gloucester in the 25-lap Outlaw, Brandon Varney of Mechanic Falls in the 20-lap Runnin’ Rebels and the 20-lap Cruisers, Ryan Farrar of Oxford in the 20-lap Sport Trucks, and Breeanna Spaulding of Lisbon in the 15-lap ladies’ division.
FORMULA ONE: Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg on Sunday as both Mercedes cars failed to finish.
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel finished second and third, with Vettel taking back the series lead from Lewis Hamilton.
On a bad day for Mercedes, both Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas retired from the race with mechanical issues.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Le Monde reports that Tour organizers have forbidden four-time champion Chris Froome from taking part in this year’s race.
According to the newspaper, Amaury Sport Organisation has informed Team Sky it doesn’t want Froome to be on the starting line in order to protect the image of the race because the British rider is at the center of an ongoing doping case.
