PORTLAND – Police said a woman suffered minor injuries Wednesday night when she fended off a man trying to grab her purse outside DiMillo’s restaurant on Long Wharf.

According to Portland police, the woman was headed across the restaurant’s parking lot ahead of a co-worker at about 9:30 p.m. A man, described as white, about 6 feet tall with blond hair and wearing a dark shirt, demanded money and then tried to grab the woman’s purse.

The woman resisted and the co-worker tried to pull the man away, at which point the assailant ran off.

Police said the woman was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, treated for bruises and scrapes and released.

Police said they are looking for surveillance tapes from the Commercial Street area in an attempt to identify the suspect.

They also said the suspect was seen just before the incident with another man, but no description was available.
