Portland and Maine’s southern coast are expected to enjoy a stretch of settled weather to begin the New Year.
James Brown, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, said the wintry mix of rain and snow that hit the region on New Year’s Eve should end late Tuesday morning in Portland. Wednesday should bring more sunshine and cold temperatures forecast to reach a high of 27 in Greater Portland.
Steady rain fell in Portland and along Maine’s southern coast on Monday, while about 3 inches or more of snow was expected by Tuesday morning for Lewiston-Auburn, Gray-New Gloucester and Sanford. Heavier snow was predicted for farther inland, with ski areas expected to get 6-8 inches of fresh snow.
New Year’s Day will be brighter and milder, with sunshine expected by early Tuesday afternoon. Those greeting 2019 by jumping into the surf as part of polar dips will catch a break, with relatively mild temperatures in the mid-40s.
The rest of the first week of the new year is expected to be quiet, the weather service said, with the next chance for stormy weather on Saturday. He said it’s too early to predict whether that system will bring rain or snow because forecasters are still trying to figure out the storm’s exact track.
