ITHACA, N.Y. — Julia Champagne scored 24 points, including 11 during a third-quarter surge, and St. Joseph’s College advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament with a 68-61 victory Friday over Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kelsi McNamara added 19 points and Emily Benway scored 14 for the Monks (27-1), who reached the second round for the second straight year.

St. Joseph’s will play Ithaca (23-5) at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Bombers defeated SUNY Poly, 68-58.

Trailing 55-43 after three quarters, MIT (21-7) opened the fourth quarter with 11 straight points, closing within 55-54 on a 3-pointer by Christina Antonakakis with 7:41 remaining. The Monks never lost the lead, but it was four points or less until McNamara, Jordan Jabar and Hannah Marks each sank a pair of free throws in the final minute.

After falling behind early, St. Joseph’s closed the first quarter on a 15-2 run to build a 20-10 lead. Champagne and McNamara each had eight points for St. Joseph’s.

MIT answered with a 15-2 run in the second to grab a 25-24 lead. McNamara and Champagne each hit a 3-pointer late in the quarter to send the Monks to the break with a 34-29 advantage.

Champagne then sank back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third, and a layup by Benway made it 44-32. The lead grew as large as 53-40 on a layup by Champagne after a McNamara steal.

Kristen Egan led MIT with 14 points. Dolly Yuan and Jocelyn Luizzi added 12 apiece.

BOWDOIN 93, HUNTER 73: The third-ranked Polar Bears (27-1) opened with a 24-3 run and rolled past the Hawks (18-10) in the first round of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament at Brunswick.

Bowdoin scored the first 10 points and was never threatened as it advanced to a second-round matchup Saturday against Smith (22-6), which defeated Merchant Marine, 74-51.

Five players scored in double figures for the Polar Bears, led by Samantha Roy with 16 points. Taylor Choate and Abby Kelly each had 12, Sela Kay added 11, and Maddie Hasson finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Bowdoin led by as many as 41 points.

Jade Aponte poured in 36 points for Hunter.

AMHERST 65, HUSSON 45: Hannah Fox scored 23 points and the Mammoths (24-3) never trailed against the Eagles (19-9) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Amherst, Massachusetts.

The defending national champions led 21-10 after one quarter, 39-19 at halftime and 62-34 after three quarters. Amherst advanced to face SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.

Kenzie Worcester paced Husson with 26 points. Megan Peach had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

WILLIAMS 86, HUSSON 60: The Ephs (21-6) opened the second half on a 15-5 run to pull away and eliminate the Eagles (18-10) in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Williamstown, Massachusetts.

James Heskett had 19 points to lead four players in double figures for Williams. Kyle Scadlock had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

D.J. Bessey led Husson with 13 points.

SOFTBALL

ABILENE CHRISTIAN 9, MAINE 2: The Wildcats (5-9) scored six runs in the third inning and defeated the Black Bears (1-6) at Abilene, Texas.

Laurine German had an RBI double, and Rebecca Findley was 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Black Bears.

MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY 7, MAINE 0: Mia Hoveland pitched a two-hitter as the Roos (12-4) shut out the Black Bears (1-5) at Abilene, Texas.

Laurine German had a triple and Kelby Drews added a double for Maine.
