The postseason is already underway in tennis and track (see stories) and now it’s baseball, softball and lacrosse’s turn to follow suit.

The regular season for those sports was winding up at press time and playoff excitement is right around the corner.

Here’s a glimpse:

Baseball

Falmouth, Freeport, Greely and Yarmouth’s baseball teams are all playoff-bound, the only question is where they’ll be seeded, while North Yarmouth Academy was still battling for a postseason berth at press time.

In Western A, Falmouth lost 3-1 at Cape Elizabeth last Wednesday, then improved to 9-6 with an 11-1 home win over Yarmouth Friday. Robbie Armitage had two hits and Cam Guarino was the hard-luck loser against the Capers. In the victory, Connor Aube went wild, with four stolen bases, four runs scored and two RBI. Aube, Colby Emmertz and Tyler Gee had multiple hits. The Yachtsmen (fourth in the Heal Points standings) closed the regular season at home versus Poland Tuesday.

Defending Class B champion Greely was second to York in the Heals at 11-4 following an 8-6 win at York and a 2-1 home loss to Kennebunk last week. In the victory, Chaz Reade had two hits and three RBI and Will Bryant went the distance. Bryant doubled and scored the only run in the defeat. The Rangers closed the regular season at home versus No. 3 Cape Elizabeth in a makeup game Wednesday.

Yarmouth fell to 8-7 and sixth following losses at Freeport (4-0) and Falmouth (11-1). The Clippers finished the regular season at Kennebunk Tuesday.

Freeport ran off three straight wins last week and improved to 7-8 and eighth in Western B. First, the Falcons dispatched of visiting Traip Academy (2-0). They then blanked visiting Yarmouth (4-0) and romped at Old Orchard Beach (13-1). Jack Davenport struck out 11 and Pete Lamagna doubled and tripled in the win over the Clippers. Against the Seagulls, Caleb Rice earned the win and Caiden Shea had three hits. Freeport was home against Gray-New Gloucester in its finale Wednesday.

In Western D, NYA was 4-11 and ninth in the standings (eight teams qualify) following a 12-6 loss at Old Orchard Beach and a 6-4 setback at Waynflete. Brady Rockey doubled twice against the Seagulls. The Panthers finished at Sacopee Valley Wednesday. A win would have gotten them into the postseason.

The playoffs begin with the preliminary round Tuesday of next week and the quarterfinal round Thursday, June 11. Those games will be hosted by the higher seeds.

Softball

Greely’s softball team continues to set the bar locally. The Rangers improved to 12-3 and moved to the top of the Western B Heal Points standings after wins last week over visiting Old Orchard Beach (6-3), host York (5-0) and visiting Kennebunk (5-2). Elizabeth Shibles had two hits and two RBI versus the Seagulls. Miranda Moore threw a three-hitter and Miranda Eisenhart had a three-run hit when Greely handed the Wildcats their first loss. Against the Rams, Kelsey Currier got the win and Sarah Felkel had three hits. The Rangers closed the regular season at home versus Cape Elizabeth Wednesday.

Yarmouth was fourth at 12-3 at the start of the week after winning at Freeport (3-0) and Falmouth (4-0). Against the Falcons, Mari Cooper threw a four-hit shutout and Kallie Hutchinson homered and drove in three runs. Cooper allowed just four hits in shutting out the Yachtsmen and also drove in two runs. The Clippers closed at Kennebunk Tuesday.

Freeport began last week seeking its first victory and wound up prevailing twice. First, the Falcons downed visiting Traip Academy, 6-3. Then, after a 3-0 loss at home over Yarmouth, Freeport beat host Old Orchard Beach, 13-6. The Falcons (2-13 and 15th in Western B, where 10 teams make the playoffs) finished their season at home against Gray-New Gloucester Wednesday.

In Western A, eighth-ranked Falmouth entered its finale against visiting Poland with a record of 8-7. Last week, the Yachtsmen won at Cape Elizabeth, 4-2, and fell at home to Yarmouth, 4-0. Julia Treadwell had three hits and earned the victory against the Capers. Treadwell had two more hits against the Clippers. Falmouth (eighth in the Heals) closed at home versus Poland Tuesday.

The playoffs begin with the preliminary round Tuesday of next week and the quarterfinal round Thursday, June 11. Those games will be hosted by the higher seeds.

Boys’ lacrosse

All five local boys’ lacrosse teams will take part in the postseason.

Falmouth took a three-game win streak into Tuesday’s regular season finale at two-time defending Class B champion and recent nemesis Cape Elizabeth (see theforecaster.net for game story). Last week, the Yachtsmen improved to 8-3 with lopsided wins at Greely (17-4) and at home on Senior Day versus Kennebunk (16-4). Against the Rangers, Bryce Kuhn paced the offense with four goals and two assists, George Gilbert and Henry Norris both tickled the twine on three occasions and Jack Mainella won 21 of 25 faceoffs.

“The difference in the first half was the faceoffs,” said Kuhn. “We kept winning them. We really had a good matchup on faceoffs.”

“I was winning the draws, but we had really good wing play today,” Mainella said. “I just figured out where my guys were. Going against better guys this year has just helped my confidence.”

“I told the kids before the game that we may have to wear them down, but I thought our depth would win out,” Falmouth coach Mike LeBel added. “Our success happened quicker than I anticipated.”

In the win over the Rams, which avenged an earlier setback, Kuhn erupted for eight goals and a strong defensive effort allowed the Yachtsmen to win with ease.

“Last time we played down there, they played man-to-man, but today, they slipped into a zone immediately and we weren’t ready for that,” Kuhn said. “Coach drew something up and we got it going and we started pumping them in.”

“We know we played a pretty rough game the first game, so coming back and beating them in this fashion is special, especially on Senior Day, with all the parents here,” said Falmouth senior defenseman Kohl Valle. “It was definitely a great game.”

“For some reason, it took us awhile to get going,” LeBel added. “I had a feeling we would.”

Greely was 7-4 and third after a 17-4 home loss to Falmouth and an 11-7 loss against NYA. Mitch Mullin had two goals against the Yachtsmen. Tim Adams scored four times in the victory.

In Eastern B, Yarmouth stretched its win streak to five after a 10-2 victory at Kennebunk last Wednesday, then met its match with a 14-5 home loss to Cape Elizabeth Friday. Bill Jacobs scored twice against the Capers, who blew the game open with eight goals in the fourth quarter.

“When you look at the score, you’d think we got killed, but anybody who was here realizes we were in it,” said Clippers coach David Pearl. “We had our looks. Our offense looked great tonight, we just couldn’t finish. We have to go back to work. It got a little disheartening at the end.”

Yarmouth (8-3 and second to Maranacook in the Heals) closed the regular season at NYA Wednesday.

The Panthers were 4-7 and fourth entering that contest. NYA lost at home to Cape Elizabeth last week, 18-2, and fell at home against Greely Monday, 11-7. Trevor Lachance had three goals against the Rangers.

Freeport was 6-5 and sixth after a 15-3 home win over Lake Region last week. The Falcons closed at home versus Waynflete Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Falmouth’s girls’ lacrosse team made a mighty statement last Tuesday with its latest huge road victory. The Yachtsmen, who had already won at defending Class B champion Yarmouth and perennial powerhouse Waynflete, went to undefeated Kennebunk and behind three goals apiece from Sydney Bell and Lizzie Goodrich and 16 clutch saves from Sarah Hutcheon, downed the Rams, 10-8.

“This was really fun,” Goodrich said. “We were really hoping to win this one. They were the number one team, but we were pretty confident.”

“We go into practice making sure we put in a 100 percent effort,” Bell said. “We can’t afford to underestimate any team. Kennebunk’s a great team. We knew they could have come back.”

“I think we just came in really focused and that really helped,” Hutcheon said. “We marked up on cutters and played strong D. (My defense lets) me know where the ball is and then I’m ready for it.”

“It’s a testament to the girls,” added Falmouth coach Kait Johnson. “We just talk about being a team and playing Falmouth lacrosse and making that a focus. These girls have put so much effort and work into being a team. They love each other.”

The Yachtsmen then held off visiting Greely Friday (8-6) and handled visiting Freeport Monday, 15-6, behind five goals from Elle Fitzgerald. Falmouth (10-1 and first in the Western B Heals) closed at Cape Elizabeth Wednesday, as it sought to avenge its lone loss (see theforecaster.net for game story).

Greely was clinging to the seventh and final playoff with a 3-7 mark following a 14-13 triple overtime home loss to Freeport and an 8-6 setback at Falmouth. Meghan O’Donovan had five goals against the Falcons. After hosting Lake Region in a makeup game Wednesday, the Rangers close at Kennebunk Thursday.

In Eastern B, Yarmouth, the defending state champion, saw its win streak hit five with an 8-6 come-from-behind victory at Waynflete last Tuesday. The Clippers erased a 4-1 deficit and prevailed behind three goals from Eliza Lunt and two apiece from Lane Simsarian and Emma Torres.

“We were a bit nervous coming in, but we pushed hard,” Torres said. “We had heart and we really wanted it.”

“We know Waynflete’s always a challenge,” said Lunt. “We really wanted it and that won us the game.”

“It was a good, emotional win for us,” added Clippers coach Dorothy Holt. “We get nervous for Waynflete because we know they’re so good. We needed to jell as a team and just play our game. We didn’t need to rush or worry, just take care of the ball.”

Yarmouth then fell to 6-4 with a 10-8 home loss to Cape Elizabeth Friday. Shannon Fallon scored four times, but the Clippers fell short.

“Cape wanted it,” said Holt. “We couldn’t handle the pressure. We showed our stuff at the end of the game, but we’re not bringing it at the beginning. This group is young is certain places and the seniors feel the pressure. We just have to jell a little bit more.”

Yarmouth (second to Oceanside in Eastern B) had a makeup game at Brunswick Wednesday and closes at NYA Thursday.

Freeport pushed its win streak to six after rallying to beat host Greely in triple overtime, 14-13, and handling visiting Gould Academy, 15-8. Against the Rangers, Courtney Broderick sent the game to overtime with a free position shot with just 10 seconds to go. Emily Johnson and Taylor Rinaldi scored during the second three-minute overtime and then, in sudden victory, Johnson scored her fourth goal to end it. Broderick had a team-high five goals. Against Gould, Johnson and Rinaldi both scored four times. Monday, the Falcons fell to 6-5 with a 15-6 loss at Falmouth. Freeport (fourth in Eastern B) closes the regular season at home versus Waynflete Thursday.

NYA began the week 1-10 and 10th (only seven teams make the playoffs). Last week, the Panthers lost 16-2 at York and Monday, they lost at home to Kennebunk, 15-1. NYA finishes up at home against Yarmouth Thursday.
