MALE:

AIDAN ROBERTS, Junior-Golf

  • SMAA Central Division all-star, second-team

Roberts was one of the area’s top golfers and he saved his best for last this fall as the Rangers finished just shy of a state championship.

Roberts started playing golf at the age of seven and it has long been his top sport. He shot an 85 at the Class A state match as a sophomore and this fall, was steady from start to finish during an all-star campaign.

Roberts, a quiet type who lets his play do the talking, had an average of just over 41 during an 8-2 regular season. On three occasions he had a round of 38.

Roberts would be even better in the postseason.

At the Class A team state match, which saw Greely tie Falmouth for second behind Scarborough, Roberts led the Rangers with a round of 74. He then shot a 78 at the individual Class B state match to tie for sixth.

“I finished it off well, but I wanted to win states,” Roberts said. “I hope to win both next year.”

Roberts’ home course is Val Halla in Cumberland, but he calls the Woodlands in Falmouth his favorite.

“I’ve put in lots of hard work at the course,” Roberts said. “I’m very competitive.”

Roberts is also a center on the always competitive Greely hockey team. He hopes to play golf in college.

First, he’ll have a senior season which promises to be memorable. Aidan Roberts, Greely’s Fall Male Athlete of the Year, is one of the state’s premier golfers and he’s only getting better.

Coach Brian Bickford’s comment: “Aidan is a fierce competitor on the golf course. He has the innate ability to focus when it really counts, under pressure. He’s worked on his routine and he sticks to it no matter the circumstances and I believe this helps him deal with good shots and bad shots alike. He’s a class individual and has the qualities to be a real team leader. From the day Val Halla opens until the day we close, Aidan is always working on his game. His future is very bright.”

FEMALE:

KATHERINE LEGGAT-BARR, Sophomore—Cross country

  • Class B state champion

  • New Englands qualifier

  • All-state, first-team

  • WMC all-star, first-team

Leggat-Barr made her presence felt in memorable fashion, bursting on to the cross country scene in championship form.

Leggat-Barr ran in middle school, but played junior varsity soccer as a freshman at Greely. She returned to the trails this fall and impressed from start to finish.

She began with a first-place finish in a meet against Falmouth and Gray-New Gloucester, winning in 19 minutes, 59 seconds. Leggat-Barr would win every league meet (her low time was 18:51 in a meet at Merriconeag). Leggat-Barr was also runner-up at the Manchester (New Hampshire) Invitational.

Her postseason was equally terrific. Leggat-Barr didn’t run at the Western Maine Conference championship meet, but was first at the regional championships with a time of 19:46.76 and at states, she came in first in a time of 19:17.12 to help the Rangers win the state title. Leggat-Barr was then 32nd (24th for scoring purposes, 19:25) at New Englands.

“I’m happy with the season,” Leggat-Barr said. “(Finishing second to Yarmouth at) regionals was a wakeup call, but everyone pushed hard at states.”

Leggat-Barr is a three-sport athlete, also playing forward on the basketball team and midfield in lacrosse.

“I love to be physically active,” said Leggat-Barr. “I love sports. Having success is fulfilling.”

Leggat-Barr, who also takes part on Greely’s Debate team, still has two seasons to impress the local cross country community before perhaps taking her show to the next level.

Don’t miss her while she’s still around. Her debut season was something special and the next act from Katherine Leggat-Barr, Greely’s Fall Female Athlete of the Year, promises to be even more jawdropping.

Coach David Dowling‘s comment: “Katherine did not step onto the cross country stage unprepared. To some observers, it may seem like she went directly from the soccer field to the trails of cross country, but in-between were many miles on the road. As a freshman participating in other sports, she was running close to five miles a day in addition to practices for her team sports. She has an intuitive sense that success in distance running must be earned and that there are not shortcuts. Katherine exemplified this discipline and commitment throughout her debut season. When I asked her what pace she ran her easy miles at she said, ‘I don’t really know. I don’t like to run slowly.’ It is this inner drive that helped lead us to a team championship this year. With her example and enthusiastic support of others, she helped bring out the best in other members of the team. Even while winning every WMC race this season, Katherine kept her focus on the team prize and was not content with individual success.”
