Cheverus and Portland’s football teams continued their winning ways last weekend, while Deering continued to struggle.

The Stags made it 37 victories in 38 outings and extended their regular season win streak to 28 with a 54-0 home blanking of Oxford Hills.

Like last week’s 67-8 victory over Lewiston, this one was over quickly, as Joe Fitzpatrick had a 43-yard touchdown run and Cody O’Brien added one from 6-yards out to make it 14-0 after one quarter. TD runs from O’Brien (1-yard), Liam LaFountain (6-yards) and Fitzpatrick (18-yards) and a 6-yard scoring pass from Ethan Jordan to Zordan Holman made it 40-0 at halftime. Cheverus put it away in the third period, as Fitzpatrick had a 27-yard TD run and Justin Johnson scored on an 11-yard scamper.

Fitzpatrick finished with 182 yards and three TDs on a dozen carries. O’Brien rushed for 23 yards and two scores on eight rushes. Jordan completed four passes in seven attempts, good for 96 yards and a TD. Noah Stebbins had two receptions for 70 yards.

The 3-0 Stags go to 3-0 Windham Friday night. Cheverus has beaten the Eagles three straight times, including 47-0 last year, also in Windham. The Eagles last win over the Stags came in the 2009 Western A Final (7-6).

Portland, which lost to Cheverus in the opener, then handled Deering, earned its first home victory Friday, 45-7, over Edward Little, a team the Bulldogs last faced in the 2002 Class A state final (a 41-6 victory). Portland improved to 42-19-2 all-time against the Red Eddies (in a series that dates to 1896) with a 45-7 triumph.

Jordan Talbot threw a short touchdown pass to Justin Zukowski in the first quarter and a TD run from Ronald Hargorve and a Talbot pass to Domenic Fagone made it 18-0 at halftime. Three scores: a long run by Jayvon Pitts-Young, a Talbot-to-Zukowski pass and a Hargrove run, made it 38-7 after three quarters and Talbot hit Fagone once more in the fourth period to account for the 45-7 final score.

Portland renews acquaintances with another longtime foe, Bangor, Saturday afternoon in Bangor. The Bulldogs hold a 64-45-15 all-time edge over the Rams (2-1 this fall). The last meeting was a 20-14 Bangor victory in the 2001 state final.

This game was part Bangor winning the turnover battle and part winning the war of attrition, as Deering dressed just 21 players for the game.

Down, 6-0, Deering made the most of its first play with the wind at its back in the second quarter, as Mike Marzilli threw a 74-yard halfback option pass over the defense to Ricardo Delgardo, who raced untouched into the end zone and then kicked the extra point to give his team a 7-6 lead.

Bangor answered to lead, 14-7, at halftime, but after a 79-yard Deering drive with the second-half kickoff produced a 15-yard touchdown pass from Max Chabot to Dominick Bernard, Deering was down only a point, 14-13.

The extra-point kick was blocked, but Deering soon got the ball back with a chance to take the lead after Bangor was stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1 from the Deering 19.

Two plays later, the game took a decisive turn when Bangor sophomore linebacker Ben Crichton read a Chabot pass over the middle perfectly, made the interception at the 25 and raced to the end zone to extend the Rams’ lead to 21-13 with 6:25 left in the quarter.

That sparked a 26-0 Bangor run to end the game and the host Rams prevailed, 40-13.

Bangor outgained Deering 318-224 in total yardage. Anthony Pruitt rushed 13 times for 70 yards for Deering, while Chabot completed 7 of 16 passes for 58 yards with three interceptions.

Deering (0-3) looks for its first victory Friday at 0-3 Massabesic (now coached by former Rams coach Jon Gallant). Last year, the Rams lost, 56-32, at the Mustangs.
