(Note: We recapped the basketball season in last week’s edition)
It was a winter for the memory banks and not just because of the record snowfall we endured.
Mid-Coast athletes impressed this winter on the ice, track, mats and in the pool.
Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team went 10-7-1 and wound up fifth in Eastern A. The Dragons proceeded to spring a quarterfinal round upset, 3-2, in double overtime, over fourth-ranked Cony, but were then unceremoniously ousted by top-ranked Lewiston, 10-0, in the semifinals. Mt. Ararat just missed the playoffs with a 7-11 mark.
On the girls’ side, Brunswick also made the playoffs, finishing 7-11 and fourth in Eastern A. Like the boys, the girls also opened with an overtime win, 2-1, over Winslow in the quarterfinals, but defending and eventual repeat champion Greely ended the Dragons’ season with a 5-1 decision in the semifinals. Mt. Ararat’s inaugural varsity season ended at 0-18.
The Class A state track meet saw Brunswick’s boys place sixth, behind individual wins from Alex Nichols in both the 200 and 400, while the girls came in fifth. Mt. Ararat placed 16th on the boys’ side and didn’t score in the girls’ meet.
There was plenty of excitement in the pool as well as the Brunswick girls were runners-up, while Mt. Ararat came in eighth and Morse ninth. The Dragons produced individual champions Jessica Russell in the 200 freestyle and Lynsie Russell in the 500 free, while the Eagles got wins from Celia Ouellette in both the 50 and 100 free. In the boys’ state meet, Brunswick was sixth, Morse 13th and Mt. Ararat did not score.
In wrestling, Brunswick was 12th in Class A, while Mt. Ararat tied for 15th. The Dragons got a win from Jared Jensen at 170 pounds. Morse came in ninth in Class B.
Before we move on to what hopefully will be a pleasant (albeit probably late) spring, here’s one last look back at the champions of winter.
