FALMOUTH — Traffic near Mile 52 on the Maine Turnpike will be stopped for up to 25 minutes at a time early next week as crews work on an overpass, the Maine Turnpike Authority announced Thursday.

Delays are expected in both directions between 10 p.m. Monday, April 2, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, weather permitting. Multiple traffic stops are needed to accommodate the erection of new steel beams for the bridge that carries Exit 53 traffic over the highway.

Intermittent traffic stops also are expected southbound from 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, to 5 a.m Wednesday, April 4.

Turnpike officials said motorists should be prepared for significant delays and seek alternate routes.

TCI Construction is rehabilitating the Interchange 53 bridge and making improvements to ramps. Work began last September and is expected to continue through November.
