The Brunswick boys’ outdoor track team, led by senior distance standout Will Geoghegan, won the Class A title for the first time in 14 seasons Saturday in Augusta.

That championship was the biggest highlight of a postseason that figures to only get more compelling in the days to come.

Here’s a look:

Track

Brunswick scored 82 points to beat runner-up Cheverus by 16. Mt. Ararat (28 points) came in 10th. Morse (1 point) tied for 22nd.

The Dragons were led by Geoghegan, who won the 800 (1 minute, 56.11 seconds), mile (4:12.57) and the two-mile (9:26.26). Junior Mike Slovenski took the pole vault (13 feet).

The Eagles got a victory from sophomore McKenzie Gary in the long jump (20-10).

In the girls’ meet, won by Scarborough with 91 points, Mt. Ararat (55) came in fourth, Brunswick (30) was eighth and Morse (10) tied for 17th.

The Eagles were led by junior Randi London, who won the discus (121 feet) and was second in the shot put (38-6). Mt. Ararat was first in both the 400 (freshman Celia Ouellette, senior Rebecca Merritt, junior Ashley Libby and freshman Maddison Prescott, 50.99) and the 3,200 (senior Erin Fitzsimmons, junior Chloe Emerson, senior Ariel McNett and senior Katrina Gelwick, 9:41.43) relays.

The Dragons top finisher was sophomore Alexis Dickinson, who was runner-up in the 100 (12.82).

The Shipbuilders were paced by sophomore Kerry Cummings, runner-up in the racewalk (7:36.69).

Tennis

Brunswick’s girls’ tennis team, seeded third in Eastern A, advanced to the regional final with wins over No. 6 Mt. Ararat (4-1) and No. 2 Cony (3-2). The Dragons battled four-time champion Lewiston Wednesday.

The Eagles finished 7-6 after losing to Brunswick.

Morse, the No. 6 seed in Western B, wound up 5-8 after falling, 3-2, at third-ranked Maranacook in the quarterfinals.

On the boys’ side, Brunswick was the lone squad to qualify. The Dragons, seeded third, beat No. 6 Mt. Blue, 4-1, in the quarterfinals and ousted No. 2 Hampden, 4-1, in the semifinals to advance to Wednesday’s regional final against Lewiston.

The Class A state finals are Saturday at Colby College in Waterville.

Baseball

The baseball playoffs began Thursday when No. 6 Brunswick (8-8) went to No. 3 Oxford Hills (14-2) for the quarterfinals. The Dragons lost both regular season meetings against the Vikings, falling, 4-1, at Oxford Hills on May 3 and 11-1 at home May 26.

Morse (1-15) and Mt. Ararat (8-8) fell short this spring.

Softball

Mt. Ararat’s regular season-ending four-game winning streak (capped by a 2-0 home victory over Brewer) gave the Eagles an 8-8 record and the No. 8 seed in Eastern A. Mt. Ararat went to top-ranked Skowhegan (15-1) in Thursday’s quarterfinals. In the regular season meeting, May 7, the Eagles lost, 12-0.

Brunswick and Morse both finished 4-12 and failed to qualify.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team, the defending Eastern A champion, is the No. 2 seed in the region behind defending state champ Portland this time around.

The Dragons went 10-2 in the regular season (losing only to Class B powers Falmouth and Yarmouth) and will host either No. 3 Messalonskee (9-3) or No. 6 Cheverus (6-6) in Saturday’s semifinal round. During the regular season, Brunswick swept the Eagles, 10-5, in Oakland on May 22 and 10-4 at home, four days later. The Dragons didn’t see the Stags this spring.

A victory Saturday will likely set up a showdown at Portland (12-0) in Wednesday’s regional final. Last year, in the state game, the Bulldogs beat the Dragons, 9-3. Brunswick beat Portland in the 2007 state final (12-9).

The Class A Final is Saturday, June 19, at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

In Eastern B, Morse beat visiting Gardiner, 13-8, in its finale to wind up 7-5, but fell short of the postseason.

Mt. Ararat also missed the playoffs with a 6-6 mark.

Girls’ lacrosse

All three local girls’ lacrosse teams have high hopes entering the postseason.

Brunswick was a little more mortal this season, but still wound up 10-2 after a 20-6 romp at Oxford Hills last Tuesday. The top-ranked Dragons earned a bye into Saturday’s semifinal round and will meet either No. 4 Cony (8-4) or No. 5 Messalonskee (6-6). Brunswick swept the Rams this spring, 15-7, at home April 26 and 11-9, in Augusta, May 17. The Dragons also downed the Eagles twice, 13-1, on the road April 29 and 11-7, at home, May 20.

Mt. Ararat, meanwhile, earned the No. 2 seed after winning, 15-7, at Morse in its finale last Wednesday. The 8-4 Eagles will host either No. 3 Cheverus (7-5) or No. 6 Portland (7-5) in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. Mt. Ararat didn’t face either squad this year.

If the top seeds advance, the Eagles would go to Brunswick Wednesday for the regional final. The teams split this season, winning on the other’s field. On May 12 in Topsham, the Dragons prevailed, 12-5. Mt. Ararat then sprung a 10-9 upset May 24 in Brunswick.

The Class A Final is Saturday, June 19 at 3 p.m., in Portland.

In Eastern B, Morse finished 7-5 and No. 4. The Shipbuilders go to top-ranked, two-time defending regional champion North Yarmouth Academy (9-3) for the semifinals Saturday. The teams didn’t play in the regular season. The Panthers beat the Shipbuilders in the 2001 quarterfinals (15-8) and the 2006 (14-2), 2007 (17-3) and last year’s (15-3) semifinals.
