His family spent summers in Maine and lived in Andover, Mass., where he attended local schools.
Following graduation from Bates College, he enrolled in Boston University Medical School.
He enlisted in the military and was a commissioned second lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corps, but didn’t qualify for active duty due to previous bouts with tuberculosis.
After completing his residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he returned to Portland in March 1946 and opened his own medical office.
Over the years, he was on the staff of the Children’s Hospital, the Maine Eye & Ear Infirmary, Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center, where he was chief of the Department of Otolaryngology from 1966 to 1985. In December 1989 he retired from practice after 43 years.
He was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church, where he was active in the weekly men’s discussion group until this year. He was a past president and 50-year member of the Woodfords Club, and served on the board of directors of the Maine Institute for the Blind.
His many interests included boating, photography and model railroading. Following retirement, he and his wife purchased a travel trailer and toured the southern states from west to east coast during the winter months.
He was predeceased by his brother Charlie Lovely, sister Lillian Toth and her husband Joe, and son-in-law Johnny Perkins.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Eleanor; two daughters, Carol Perkins, and Suzanne Friel and her partner Dana Clark; three grandchildren, James, Abby and Nicole Perkins; and great-grandson Zeek Perkins; three nephews, Mike Toth, Steve and Andy Lovely, and two nieces, Caroline Usher and Patty Ray; sister-in-law Beth Lovely; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
