Holt’s offense was a constant and his intangibles also played a big role this winter for the Falcons, who enjoyed their best season in a decade.

Holt began playing basketball in the fifth grade and it became his top sport.

“Basketball’s an athletic sport and I like the competitiveness,” Holt said.

Holt joined the Freeport varsity as a sophomore and the Falcons improved from three wins the year before to five, but fell short of the playoffs.

This winter, Freeport believed it was ready to take the next step and that’s exactly what happened, as the Falcons won 11 games, producing their first winning season and earning their first trip to the playoffs since 2008. Along the way, Holt averaged 15.8 points (good for sixth in the conference), 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest. He hit 62 percent of his shots and shot a sizzling 44 percent from 3-point range.

Highlights included 14 points in an overtime loss to Gray-New Gloucester, 22 points in a win over Old Orchard Beach, 14 points in a loss to Class A champion Greely, 13 in a win over Mt. Ararat, 14 points in a win over Morse, 15 in a loss to Fryeburg Academy, a career-high 35 point explosion in a victory over York, 14 in a win over Lake Region, 29 points in a victory over Wells and 16 in a loss to Gray-New Gloucester.

In Freeport’s preliminary round victory over Lisbon, the Falcons’ first postseason win in a decade, Holt had 26 points. He then tallied 11 in a close quarterfinal round loss to Wells.

“This year was a big turning point for us,” Holt said. “We were optimistic coming into the season. Next year, we could be even better. We’re still fairly young.”

Holt plays AAU basketball and will pitch and play first base this spring for the Freeport baseball team. He also belongs to the school’s RSVP (Reducing Sexism and Violence Program) and is a mentor. He hopes for even more success next winter and would like to play at the college level.

He and his teammates made great strides this season. Toby Holt, Freeport’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, has gotten a taste of success and hopes to keep lighting up the scoreboard and leading his team to victory.

Coach Bill Ridge‘s comment: “Toby was the definition of consistency for us this season. We relied on him in many ways. His offensive skills are known around the league, but what surprised many opponents was his relentless defense and rebounding. Toby is a hard worker, who you never hear a peep from. An absolute pleasure to coach. He was explosive for us in moments that we needed a big basket and was steady and level-headed during times of adversity.”

Goodman came to Freeport this winter and helped an already-competitive team take the next step, a historic step, hitting an abundance of key shots along the way.

Goodman grew up in Durham playing basketball and soccer and basketball has long been her favorite sport.

“I really enjoy basketball,” Goodman said. “My parents both played and passed it on to me. I’m competitive, but I like to have fun. I try to use my talent to glorify God.”

Goodman made her presence felt as a standout at Pine Tree Academy her first three high school seasons before moving on to Freeport this winter, where she stepped right in and become one of the elite players in the Western Maine Conference.

Goodman averaged 12.9 points (good for 11th in the conference), 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, enhancing a veteran core and helping the Falcons post 14 regular season victories, their best record since the early 1990s. 

Highlights included 11 points in her first game, a win over Sacopee Valley, 16 points and nine rebounds in a victory over Old Orchard Beach, 16 more points in a win over Poland, a season-high 28 points in a victory at Morse, 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Yarmouth, 14 points in a victory over Fryeburg Academy, 16 points in a win over Cape Elizabeth, 22 points in a victory at Lake Region and 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a win over Wells.

Goodman continued to shine in the tournament, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists in a quarterfinal round victory over Wells, the Falcons’ first in that round since 1977, and tallying 13 points in a semifinal round win over Poland. In Freeport’s first regional final in 42 years, Goodman had eight points and five rebounds, but the Falcons’ title dreams were dashed by Lake Region.

“I knew we were capable and we made a great run,” Goodman said. “To see the community support us like they did was great. We made some great memories.”

Goodman, who also plays with the AAU Firecrackers program, hopes to continue playing in college and at press time, was weighing her options.

She wasn’t a Falcon for long, but Allie Goodman, Freeport’s Winter Female Athlete of the Year, certainly made her presence felt and she and her teammates authored the most memorable story of the season.

Coach Mike Hart’s comment: “Allie likes to shoot the ball and when she shoots with confidence, it’s it’s a beautiful thing. She can be deadly. She’s a tough player, a good passer, a good ball-handler. She just did what she does. She didn’t have to be our leading scorer for us to be successful.”
