A reconstruction team with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office investigating a fatal July crash in Naples involving seven motorcycles and a van concluded last week that speed and alcohol use were not a factor in the accident.
The accident occurred July 6 when a group of eight people, including three Gray firefighters, a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy and an emergency dispatcher from Windham came around a turn on Route 114 to find a van waiting to make a left turn on to River Road.
As the riders and passenger tried to avoid the van by swerving around it, Gray resident Rochelle Plummer, 43, was thrown from her motorcycle when it skidded into a dirt gully. Plummer, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
Two other riders were taken to the hospital with injuries. The driver of the van was uninjured.
At a press conference after the accident, Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said the steep road grade, a blind curve and new pavement all could have been factors contributing to the crash.
