Even dual 18-point performances – by Adam LaBrie and Cody Cook – couldn’t elevate No. 1 Yarmouth above No. 4 Lake Region, when the two teams met at the Cross Insurance Arena in the B West semifinals on Thursday night.

Instead, the Lakers’ Jack Lesure fueled a scorching upset, snatching rebounds on both ends of the court, coordinating the attack like a seasoned general and working to get the ball in the hot hands of Marcus DeVoe, who ultimately delivered a game-high 24 points.

The matchup seesawed from beginning to end, the Clippers’ Cote Sawyer scoring first before Lake Region missed a pair at the line and then Yarmouth missed a pair of their own. Lesure grabbed the rebound on the second of those and hurtled it forward to DeVoe, who promptly sank the first of his seven – yeah, seven – threes on the night.

That tally, by the way, set a new, single-game tournament record for Class B, breaking the existing record of six, which has stood for more than 20 years.

DeVoe’s second three arrived at the very end of the first quarter, and tied the score at 10 a piece; his third drained – following another Lesure rebound – as the second quarter began to wind down, and his fourth just moments later. It put the Lakers on top, 24-22, but the Clippers would get the last laugh of the half: in the final seconds, Lake Region’s Quinn Piland delivered a spectacular stuff on Cook, but Cook, unfazed, grabbed his own rebound and nimbly slipped it home to set the score at 24-all going into the break.

The third quarter – the first not to end in a tie – ended in Lake Region’s favor, 38-35, even after a Yarmouth two, by Musseit M’Bareck, closed the stretch out. The Lakers had grabbed an edge, and they would hold onto it through the fourth, when they never relinquished the lead. Up 50-49 with 23.8 seconds to play, Laker Nick Hall nailed a pair of critical frees to give his squad a three-point advantage – not insurmountable, obviously, but far less so than that one-point lead had been.

Yarmouth needed a three, and only a three would save them, so M’Bareck lofted one up – but missed, and Lesure, as he’d done time and again through the game, grabbed the rebound, chewing up precious seconds. The Clippers fouled him, of course, but even though he missed his frees, Yarmouth’s jig was up. LaBrie managed to hash one more from the line, but it wouldn’t be enough.

In addition to LaBrie’s 18 and Cook’s as well, M’Bareck contributed eight. Piland pile 10 on top of DeVoe’s 24, and Hall six.

Yarmouth retired for the year at 16-4. Lake Region improved to 15-5 but lost 51-46 to Cape Elizabeth in the B West Finals on Saturday.
