A Portland man who was critically injured in a two-vehicle head-on crash Sunday morning in Windham later died at a hospital, police said.

Windham police said Craig D. McPherson, 26, died at 12:38 p.m. at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was taken after the accident. Police said his family was with him when he died.

McPherson was driving a 2008 Dodge Caliber west on Route 302 near Cooper Ridge Road when it was struck head-on in the westbound lane about 8:25 a.m. by a 2014 Subaru Forester heading east. That car was driven by Brittney Hersom, 25, of Sanford.

Hersom was transported to Maine Medical Center with unknown injuries but was later released from the hospital, according to Windham police.

Windham police Sgt. Peter Fulton said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash. Fulton said there is no indication that either vehicle was traveling faster than the 50-mph speed limit. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The accident inflated air bags in both vehicles, Fulton said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, he said.
