Leaf-peeping season is underway and the fall foliage is in “better than average condition,” according to the Maine Forest Service.
Bill Ostrofsky, a forest pathologist at the Maine Forest Service, said the leaves have begun to change in northern Maine and there are no indications of widespread damage to trees from insects.
“The Maine forest has the potential to have a great season this year,” Ostrofsky said.
Leaves in Aroostook and northern Penobscot and Piscataquis counties are about 10 to 30 percent of peak and leaf drop has been low. Little change in foliage colors has been reported elsewhere in the state.
The state will update foliage conditions at mainefoliage.com every Wednesday through at least Oct. 17. Visitors to that site can sign up for weekly reports by e-mail.
In addition, ranger-led weekend foliage hikes will be offered at state parks and public lands in October. Visit www.parksandlands.com for information.
