Maine Milestones

Riverton Rec of Portland earned a 65-59 win over the previously unbeaten Yellow Jackets of the Portland Boys & Girls Club on March 12 at the Portland Expo to capture its second straight championship in the Greater Portland High School Rec Basketball League.

The league includes 12 teams from Portland, South Portland, Lewiston and Auburn.

More than 150 high school students participate. The Riverton Rec team is composed of students from Deering High.

 

• Bowdoin College students Jackson Bloch of Falmouth and Hannah Miller of Elmore, Vt., won 50-kilometer freestyle titles at the Rangeley Lakes Loppet on March 1.

Bloch finished with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 24 seconds – 7 seconds ahead of former Bates College skier Sam Evans-Brown. Alec McGovern of Bowdoin was fourth, and former Fryeburg Academy standout Silas Eastman of Colby placed fifth.

Miller won the women’s race by more than five minutes with a time of 2:37:31.4. Dartmouth skiers took the next four spots, including third-place finisher Molly Siegel of Bethel.

Carrie McCusker, 44, of Cape Elizabeth claimed a victory in the women’s 25K freestyle, completing the distance in 1:27:35.30.

Other winners were: Dennis Page of Bennington, N.H., men’s 25K classic; Callie Douglass of Charlotte, Vt., women’s 25K classic; and Alex Blais-Montpetit of Sherbrooke, Quebec, men’s 25K freestyle.

 

• Six Maine skiers – Tara Humphries of North Yarmouth, Sadie James of Avon, Braden Becker of Yarmouth, Daniel Streinz of Hersey, Kaelyn Woods of New Gloucester and Emily Ramsey of New Sharon – helped New England win the Alaska Cup at the United States Ski Association’s Nordic Junior National Championships, held March 3-8 in Stowe, Vt.

The 45-member New England team easily defeated nine other teams, placing first in all four events – 5- and 10-kilometer classic; classic sprints; 5K, 10K and 15K freestyle mass starts; and freestyle relays.
