ROAD RACING

Will Geoghegan of Brunswick and Darby Middlebrook of Watertown, Massachusetts, were the overall winners in a Clam Festival Classic 5-mile road race slowed by heat and humidity Saturday in Yarmouth.

Geoghegan won the men’s division of the race, in its 38th year, in a time of 25 minutes, 29 seconds – more than two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Nick Morfesi of Allston, Massachusetts (27:56).

Middlebrook took first in the women’s division, finishing in 31:14 – just 11 seconds ahead of Gabrielle Wheeler of New Sweden.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Jerry Downs hit a tiebreaking single with one out in the ninth inning, Bobby Dalbec brought him home with another single, and the Portland Sea Dogs beat the Harrisburg Senators 4-2 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Austin Rei’s RBI single broke a scoreless tie in the seventh. He later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The Senators answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning off Matthew Gorst (1-5).

Sea Dogs starter Daniel McGrath pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks and striking out five. Gorst went two innings, and Adam Lau pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

NECBL: Tatem Levins had three hits, including a home run, as the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (9-22) defeated the Sanford Mainers 7-4 in Laconia, New Hampshire.

Connor Tate had three hits for Sanford (13-22), while Orlando Adams had three RBI and hit his sixth home run of the season.

SOCCER

USL2: Reading United AC beat the GPS Portland Phoenix 4-3 on penalty kicks in the USL League Two Eastern Conference semifinals in West Lawn, Pennsylvania, after playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two 15-minute extra periods.

Khesanio Hall, Emilo Ycaza and Ryan Peterson had successful penalty kicks for the Phoenix, with Peterson’s tying it at 3 on their fifth try before Yaya Fane converted for Reading (11-1-3).

Hall scored in the 42nd minute for the Phoenix (9-4-2). Reading’s Richard Schlentz tied it in the 52nd.

Reading will play the Western Mass Pioneers on Sunday for a spot in the national semifinals.

TRACK AND FIELD

PAN AM CHAMPIONSHIPS: University of Maine sophomore James Olivier placed sixth in the 800-meter final at the Pan American U20 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Olivier, of Augusta, finished in 1 minute, 54.21 seconds. Raul Neri Franco of Mexico won the race in 1:49.10.

HORSE RACING

SCARBOROUGH DOWNS: The track canceled its live racing for Sunday because of a forecast of extreme heat. The track will be open for simulcast wagering.

HASKELL INVITATIONAL: Maximum Security captured the $1 million Haskell Invitational and survived a steward’s inquiry, capping a long day at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey, that included a major delay triggered by intense heat and safety concerns for the horses and riders.

Those concerns led to the cancellation of six races and the delay in six stakes, including the Haskell, the biggest race in Monmouth’s meet. Racing resumed around 6 p.m., and the Haskell went off at 8:11 p.m. – 2 hours, 24 minutes after its scheduled start. The field was reduced to six horses when third-place Belmont Stakes finisher Joevia was scratched after the delay.

Animal rights activists protested outside the track before the first race.

BOXING

INJURY: Maxim Dadashev remained in a medically induced coma at UM Prince George’s Hospital Center following several hours of surgery for severe head trauma suffered Friday night in a bout at The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

The Russian-born lightweight underwent surgery for a subdural hematoma, the gruesome aftermath of a 140-pound world title eliminator against Subriel Matias. Dadashev, 28, had absorbed repeated violent blows to the head before trainer Buddy McGirt stopped the fight following the 11th round.

Neurosurgeon Mary I.H. Cobb performed the surgery, in which a section of Dadashev’s skull was removed to relieve swelling on the brain. There was extensive bleeding as well, she told Dadashev’s manager, Egis Klimas, and strength and conditioning coach, Donatas Janusevicius. Next, Cobb said, it was a matter of seeing how Dadashev responded to the surgery and medication intended to help relieve additional swelling and what, if any, brain damage had occurred.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: The first super-tough 6,500-foot climb proved to be no obstacle for Julian Alaphilippe, the race leader who kept his yellow jersey, while defending champion Geraint Thomas struggled up the Tourmalet pass and lost time.

Thibaut Pinot won Stage 14 up the legendary ascent in the Pyrenees, making amends for a disaster on Stage 10, when he lost lots of time. Alaphilippe finished third and extended his overall lead to 2 minute, 2 seconds over Thomas.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Rookie Marine Johannes scored 17 points, making all six of her shots, to lead the New York Liberty to an 83-78 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to a two-year, $4.2 million contract with Brock McGinn to avoid arbitration.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Mike Shanahan attended a Denver Broncos practice for the first time since he was fired as coach on New Year’s Eve 2008.

Shanahan was a guest of new head coach Vic Fangio. He also is friends with new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, who worked for Shanahan’s son, Kyle, in San Francisco.

Mike Shanahan spent 14 seasons in charge of the Broncos, guiding them to two Super Bowl titles in the late 1990s. His 146 wins, including the playoffs, are the most in club history.

• The Arizona Cardinals placed six players on the physically unable to perform list: linebackers Dante Booker (back) and Brooks Reed (hip), tight end Charles Clay (knee), offensive lineman Max Garcia (knee), defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche (knee) and cornerback Brandon Williams (back).
