SANFORD — It took until the final seconds, but Sanford finally was able to secure its first victory of the season on Monday, as the Spartans held on for a 54-52 victory over Noble in an SMAA boys basketball game at Veterans Memorial Gymnasium.

Frank Veino sank two free throws with 11 seconds left for Sanford (1-5), which loomed large as the Spartans fouled Noble’s Nolan Smeeton while attempting a 3-pointer down three with 1.6 seconds left. But Smeeton could only make 1-3 from the line as the Knights (0-6) still search for their first victory.

Smeeton led the Knights with 17 points, while the Spartans were paced by Connor Yuill (19) and Tye Laviolette (16).
