WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester defeated Gray-New Gloucester 7-3 Monday, giving the Maine state champions their first loss of the Senior League Eastern Regional softball tournament.
GNG took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Alex Thompson. Worcester rallied with four runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three walks and adding three singles. Worcester added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to finished its scoring.
Thompson led off the sixth for GNG with another double and scored on a base hit from Taylor Whaley. Breanna Bozzuto scored the final run in the seventh after leading off with a single, but GNG left the bases loaded.
Sam Libby took the loss, giving up six walks, two hits and six runs.
The team next plays Westfield, Mass., today at 3 p.m.
SENIOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
WALDO COUNTY 7, COASTAL 2: Matt Palmer struck out 10 and gave up just two hits to lead Waldo County to the state championship with a win over Coastal at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.
Waldo County defeated Costal 8-2 on Sunday to force a second game Monday for the title.
Adam Higgins led the offense with a double, two singles and two RBI. Garth Clements contributed a triple for the winners.
Anthony Blanco had two singles and an RBI for Coastal.
JUNIOR LEGION BASEBALL
SEACOAST LAW & TITLE 8, FAYETTE STAPLES 6: Keegan Lowe delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth and took the mound in the seventh to strike out the final two batters and seal Seacoast Law & Title’s victory over Fayette-Staples at Westbrook.
Seacoast (18-3) wins the series 2-1 with the victory and advances to the state tournament, which begins Aug. 8 at the University of Southern Maine. Fafyette-Staples finished up 10-11.
Kyle Heath also helped the offense with a two-run double in the second inning as Seacoast took a 4-0 lead.
OA-YARMOUTH 9, FAIRFIELD 5: With his team leading, 6-5, Tom Sullivan tripled in two runs in the sixth inning to secure a win for OA-Yarmouth (15-6) at Fairfield (15-6).
With the win Yarmouth also wins the playoff series, 2-1 and advances to the state tournament.
Yarmouth scored five runs in the top of the first inning, with a walk, two hit batters and three singles.
Matt Highland came through with a two-run single and Alan Grover knocked in another run with a base hit.
Starter Andrew Turcotte lasted five inning to get the win. He struck out three and walked two.
NECBL
NAVIGATORS 6, MAINERS 3: Matt Boulter went 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored to help the North Shore Navigators (22-20) defeat the Sanford Mainers (20-22) in Lynn, Mass.
The Mainers were held scoreless until the eighth inning, when Justin Leisenheimer hit a two-run double and later scored on a fielder’s choice.
Junior Mendez was the winning pitcher for North Shore.
He gave up four hits through seven shutout innings while striking out five.
