The annual youth field day at the Scarborough Fish and Game Association will introduce dozens of local youth to outdoor skills Saturday.
The annual day offers free instruction in seven outdoor courses with the help of volunteers from the Scarborough Fish & Game Association, and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
The free youth day is one of several held around the state, and a tradition at the Scarborough club.
Instructors will help teach youth skills in outdoor survival, black powder rifle marksmanship, orienteering and compass navigation, rifle and shotgun marksmanship, and archery. There also will be an obstacle course to test fitness.
Mike Scammon, the club youth program director, said 65 registrations have been completed and a few spots remain for interested Maine youth ages 8 to 15 who sign up today.
The annual event always fills up, said the club spokeswoman, Suzanne Hamilton.
In 2009, as many as 100 youth attended and last year about 70, Hamilton said.
“It’s to try to get kids to realize they can do something other than sit on the coach or play video games, that there are things they can do outside,” Hamilton said.
