An Oakland-based heating oil company has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over claims that the oil company’s facilities weren’t properly prepared to handle oil spills.
Fabian Oil Inc., which has locations in Oakland, Jay, Augusta and Thomaston, has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle the claims, according to a press release from the EPA.
After inspections in 2009 and 2010, the agency found that Fabian’s spill-prevention plans were inadequate, according to the release.
The EPA’s regulations apply to facilities that store more than 1,320 gallons of oil above ground, the release said. Fabian’s facilities store more than 30,000 gallons above ground.
Since the inspections, Fabian has updated its spill-prevention plans and started to implement them. The company has upgraded its equipment and tested the integrity of its oil tanks, the release said.
Fabian, which was founded in 1988, sells heating oil, gasoline and other petroleum products.
