WISCASSET — Tropical Storm Irene may have been the indirect cause of a fire that caused extensive damage to a home in Wiscasset this afternoon.
Fire Chief Rob Bickford said Peter Dalton, the owner of a home at 196 Indian Road, returned to his property around 4:45 p.m. to discover it was on fire.
Dalton’s home had been without electrical power since service was knocked out Sunday by Irene. When the power came back on it may have set an appliance on fire, Bickford said.
Dalton alerted authorities, but there was not much that could be done by the time firefighters arrived.
“It was pretty involved,” Bickford said. “It’s still standing and structurally sound, but there is a lot of fire and water damage to the interior.
Dalton told authorities he would stay with relatives. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
