Scarborough High graduate Ben Greenberg was named the Dr. John Winkin Award winner Friday as Maine’s top high school baseball player.
Greenberg went 5-2 with a 1.18 ERA. He struck out 52 batters in 412/3 innings and opponents hit just .182 against him. He also batted .381.
Finalists were Devin Warren of Messalonskee, Dylan Belanger of Valley, Kyle Fletcher of Monmouth, Cody Collins of Bangor Christian, Anthony Haskell of Sacopee Valley and Will D’Agostino of Falmouth.
FIGURE SKATING
GRAND PRIX: Olympic bronze medalists Gracie Gold, Jason Brown and Ashley Wagner are among the Americans given assignments for the 2014-15 season.
Fellow Olympians Polina Edmunds, Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholmay, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani also will compete.
COLLEGES
NCAA: Forward Joe Thomas is transferring from Niagara to play for the Miami Hurricanes in 2014-15, and he will have one year of eligibility.
The 6-foot-7, 235-pound Thomas averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 30 games last season at Niagara.
• Former California wrestler Michael Williams will take over as interim athletic director while the school seeks a replacement for the outgoing Sandy Barbour.
Cal won 19 team national championships and 92 titles in individual events during Barbour’s 10-year tenure. But there were also issues in terms of on-field performance by the football team and low graduation rates in some sports.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER: D.C. United forward Fabian Espindola was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount by MLS for violent conduct toward Montreal Impact midfielder Felipe Martins during United’s 4-2 road victory June 11.
BASEBALL
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Jurors adjourned for the weekend without reaching a verdict in a trial to determine fault for the beating that left San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow disabled following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ home opener in 2011.
Stow’s family is seeking $37.5 million to cover the cost of lifetime medical care, plus double that amount for pain and suffering.
NECBL: Jim McDade threw seven shutout innings of one-hit ball for host Vermont (10-6), pitching the Mountaineers to a 6-2 victory over the Sanford Mainers (8-8).
FCBL: Max Kuhn’s two homers powered the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (7-13) to a 5-0 victory over the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (10-10) in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. Lincoln Sanborn (2-1) got the win for Sanford, pitching eight innings while yielding just two hits. Graham McIntire also homered for the Tide.
TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Christian Corneil lined a two-out single as Lenders Network (1-5) used a five-run seventh inning to beat Patriot Insurance (3-3) 7-3 in Portland.
Kevin Chamberlain, Nick Whittaker and Tyler Laverriere combined for 16 strikeouts for Lenders.
JUNIOR LEGION: Yankee Ford’s Drake Dumont pitched a complete game, striking out five in a 6-3 victory over Wells Warriors Post 143 in Portland.

WNBA: Chicago Sky forward Elena Delle Donne is sidelined indefinitely with a recurrence of Lyme disease.
