Morrill Post wins Legion Zone 4 championship
Henry Curran threw a shutout Monday to lead Morrill Post of South Portland over Westbrook 2-0 in the American Legion Zone 4 title game.
Curran allowed just four hits, struck out 12 and walked one. Nick Whitten was 2 for 4 with two RBI and Sam Troiano went 2 for 3 with two runs.
Nate Boyle took the loss in the pitchers’ duel. He struck out 10 and walked two.
NECBL: Drake Parker knocked in the game-winning run in the top of the 12th inning to lead the Sanford Mainers (18-11) past the Ocean State Waves (20-12) 2-1 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Dan Hetzel went 2 for 5 for Sanford.
Ryan Johnson pitched a perfect inning of relief to earn his first win of the season for Sanford.
In Sanford’s second game Monday, Aaron Hill singled to drive in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Mystic Schooners (17-14) won 6-5 at Mystic, Connecticut.
Steven Berman went 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBI, and Corey Raley added a two-run homer.
SOFTBALL
Little League: Scarborough Little League easily beat Derry, New Hampshire American Little League in East Regional play 13-3 in a game shortened to four innings.
Scarborough scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning sparked by two-run singles by Isabella Dickinson and Sylvia Foley.
Madison Blanche reached base twice and scored three runs. Dickinson got the win, allowing three runs on one hit, striking out seven and walking five.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Atlanta Dream Coach Michael Cooper has early stage tongue cancer and has taken a leave from the WNBA team.
He will have surgery this week at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta and a full recovery is expected, the Dream said.
FOOTBALL
College: Bob McNamara, an All-American football player for Minnesota in the 1950s and later a major fund raiser for the university, has died. He was 82.
The university announced McNamara’s death. The school said McNamara died after a long illness Sunday night.
• The Big 12 Conference assigned a female official to work one of its games for the first time in league history.
Commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced that Catherine “Cat” Conti will be on the crew for Kansas’ season opener at home Sept. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.
SOCCER
WORLD CUP: FIFA prosecutor Michael Garcia’s report into alleged World Cup bidding corruption has been delayed by several weeks.
FIFA said the ethics committee’s investigatory chamber expects to submit its report “by the first week of September.” In June, Garcia set a target of late July to deliver his confidential report to ethics judge Joachim Eckert.
MLS: FC Dallas midfielder Hendry Thomas will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn ligament in his left knee.
Thomas is expected to miss six to eight months after surgery Monday.

Croatia Open: Pablo Carreno Busta saved two match points to defeat Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 and reach the second round.
