The man-advantage was no edge for Portland on Friday night as the Pirates converted just one of nine power plays while allowing a shorthanded goal during a 3-2 loss to the host Binghamton Senators.
Buddy Robinson put the Senators ahead with a shorthanded goal in the first period and Shane Prince followed a few minutes later during a delayed penalty against Portland.
Portland’s Jordan Szwarz scored an unassisted shorthanded goal in the second period but Binghamton’s Aaron Johnson answered.
Portland rookie Henrik Samuelsson scored his first goal in the third period.
COLLEGES
FIELD HOCKEY: Annabelle Hamilton scored in the 45th minute on a penalty stroke to lift Maine past host UMass-Lowell 2-1.
Marzana Fiedtkou gave the River Hawks (4-10, 0-3 America East) the leadin the 20th minute. Holly Stewart answered for the Black Bears (9-6, 3-0) off a direct corner. Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett tended the Maine net.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Host Quinnipiac blanked Maine 4-0 in a non-conference game.
Quinnipiac (3-0-1) held a 47-13 advantage in shots over the Black Bears (2-3-1).
MEN’S SOCCER: Corridon O’Kyle scored both goals for Johnson & Wales in a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph’s College at Standish.
PREP SCHOOLS
GIRLS SOCCER: Abby Moore, Brooke Downey and Aimee Briand scored for Berwick Academy in a 3-3 tie against Dana Hall at Wellesley, Massachusetts.
BASKETBALL
NBA DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE: David Arseneault Jr., the 28-year-old associate head coach at Division III Grinnell College in Iowa, was hired as the coach of the Reno Bighorns, the Sacramento Kings’ affiliate.

LPGA: France’s Karine Icher carded a 4-under 68 and a 5-under 139 total, good for a second-round lead in the KEB-HanaBank Championship in Incheon, South Korea.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Jay Haas and Joe Durant shot 8-under 63 to share the first-round lead in the Greater Hickory Kia Classic in Cornover, North Carolina.
EUROPEAN TOUR: South Africa’s Ernie Els took a two-stroke lead in the Hong Kong Open, shooting a 5-under 65 to reach 9-under 131.
PGA: Andrew Putnam carded a 6-under 65 and a share of the second-round lead with Russell Knox in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.
TENNIS
WTA: Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev has been fined $25,000 and suspended for a year for questioning Serena and Venus Williams’ gender in comments on Russian TV.
KREMLIN CUP: U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic reached the semifinals in Moscow by beating Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-3.
