Saco police are warning the public about a phone scam falsely requesting donations for the families of two New York City police officers who were recently killed.
Police received a complaint shortly after noon Friday from a Saco resident who had received a call seeking donations and then became suspicious that she was being targeted, Saco police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said in a written statement.
“Anyone receiving a similar telephone call should contact the Saco Police Department to report the incident,” Holland said.
Police received reports of a similar scam in mid-December falsely asking for donations for a Saco Fire Department fundraiser, he said.
“I want to take this opportunity to remind residents and others to protect themselves from becoming a victim of fraud by never giving out personal information. Learn to recognize how, when and where fraud occurs. We recommend you delete unsolicited emails and texts, ask to see permits from transient sellers, shred junk mail and hang up on unsolicited calls,” Holland wrote in the statement.
