The governor’s proposed budget contemplates that municipalities assess property tax against nonprofit organizations with $500,000 or more in assessed value.

It is puzzling that churches are exempted from this proposal. Churches are parasitic by their very nature, consuming a wide range of public resources, yet returning little or no benefit to the societal host.

Many churches own significant amounts of real property, often property that has no real connection to the church proper.

It is neither legally nor morally correct to assess a land trust while giving a church a pass. After all, some churches have been on the public dole for centuries.
