A driver escaped to safety after the person’s car caught fire Monday night on Route 9 in North Yarmouth.

An emergency dispatcher said the vehicle was traveling along Route 9 around 8 p.m. when the driver noticed that the vehicle was on fire. By the time the North Yarmouth Fire Department arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Route 9 was closed to traffic for about 45 minutes. The name of the driver and the make of the vehicle were not available.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
