Hayes Estrella made eight saves for USM (2-0).
The Monks fell to 0-2.
MAINE MARITIME 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: John-John Dickenson scored two goals to power the Mariners (1-0) past the Monks (0-1) at Castine.

SOUTHERN MAINE 2, CLARK 0: Kiki Huntress opened the scoring with an assist from Sarah Lowell and Gaby Panagakos added another goal to lift the Huskies to a season-opening win at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Breanna Atwood made three saves for USM.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4, ST. JOSEPH’S 0: Marie Hoehner, Emily Martin and Lauren Beitler scored in the first half, and the Nor’easters shut out the Monks in a season opener in Biddeford.
Karley Belisle added a second-half goal.
Sydney Gillingham (three saves) and Ariel Martin (six saves) shared goaltending duties for UNE.

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, HUSSON 0: Maya Waryas and Alexa Gutowski scored as the Monks won a season opener at Standish.
Megan Quirion had an assist, and St. Joe’s goalie Kassidy Collins finished with six saves.
Kimmie Goddard made eight saves for Husson.
THOMAS 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Julia Reny scored a hat trick and Eva-Marie Stevens had a goal and two assists as the Terriers (1-0) cruised to a win over the Huskies (0-1) at Waterville.
Kayci Faulkingham chipped in with a goal and an assist.
FOOTBALL
KANSAS: Lance Leipold’s contract was extended for one more year through the 2027 season, a reward for a two-win first year that raised hopes for a long-awaited turnaround.
Leipold was hired last year, shortly after the Jayhawks parted with Les Miles following a winless season and amid sexual harassment allegations from his time at LSU. And despite never having an opportunity to put together a full recruiting class or working with his team in spring football, Leipold’s progress was evident in a late-season upset of Texas.
Leipold’s original contract was a $16.5 million, six-year pact that paid him $2.2 million in its initial season with annual $200,000 increases. He also would earn $50,000 for finishing in the Top 25, earning Big 12 coach of the year or winning seven regular-season games; $75,000 for reaching a certain academic benchmark; $100,000 for qualifying for a bowl game; and $500,000 if the Jayhawks would play for a national title.
