SACO — The city’s downtown organization, Saco Main Street, is inviting residents and others to join in on the fun as the annual Holiday Festival & Parade of Lights debuts Friday, Dec. 2.

The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Saco Train Station with the lighting of the Christmas tree, caroling and hot cocoa.

On Saturday comes the festival and parade.

There are a lot of surprises planned, with many traditions, as well as new additions, organizers say.

One new feature is a hop-on, hop-off trolley on Main Street with several stops along the way for horse-drawn carriage rides, shopping, face painting, food, and fun.

Crafts are on tap at Dyer Library starting at 9:30 a.m. and winding down at noon, and the adjacent Saco Museum will showcase the Festival of Trees from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Downtown Holiday Festival begins at noon and runs until 3 p.m. and features children’s ornament crafts with Parks & Rec at City Hal, Story Time with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Saco Train Station, a holiday photo op with colorful standees at Vic & Whit’s Park and children’s activities at The Saco Scoop. A nativity scene will be on display at Post Office Park.

Later, it will be time for a traditional Maine bean supper hosted by Toys for Tots and Atlantic Heights at Trinity Episcopal Church. The supper is 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The perennial favorite Parade of Lights commences at 6 p.m. this year — 30 minutes earlier than in past years — and Saco Main Street organizers say they are expecting more than 80 entries, and a huge crowd to ring in the season.
