Mainers take first game in NECBL playoffs, 5-4

Dalton Thomas lined a single to center to drive home Sam Dexter with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Sanford Mainers won Game 1, 5-4, in their best-of-three New England Collegiate Baseball League semifinal series with the North Adams Steeplecats at Sanford on Monday.

Shaine Hughes and Dan Hetzel each were 2 for 4 for the Mainers, while Brendan Skidmore had a two-run double in the sixth.

Corey Dube picked up the win with two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.

Sanford can eliminate the Steeplecats with a win on Tuesday at North Adams.

Game 3 in the North Division series will be at Sanford on Wednesday, if necessary.

NCBL: Bryan White had a single, double, triple and three RBI to lead the Old Orchard Beach Surge past the Newburgh Newts 8-4 in a North Country Baseball League game at The Ballpark. The teams will play again Tuesday night in the regular-season finale before the Surge host the Newts in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

TENNIS

GENERALI OPEN: Two-time former champion Robin Haase of the Netherlands advanced to the second round at Kitzbuehel, Austria, after opponent Juan Monaco pulled out in the second set with a wrist injury.

BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC: Sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic beat fellow German Carina Witthoeft 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in a first-round match at Stanford, California.

HOCKEY

NHL: Ottawa Senators forward Mike Hoffman was awarded a $2 million, one-year contract by an arbitrator.

Hoffman asked for $3.4 million while the Senators sought $1.75 million.

• Two people familiar with the decision say Buffalo Sabres vice president of hockey-related business Joe Battista is leaving the team. The Sabres are not confirming the move.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Minnesota Timberwolves completed their one-year contract with veteran point guard Andre Miller, 39, a 17-year veteran.

• The Miami Heat signed guard Josh Richardson to his rookie contract, which could earn him more than $2.5 million over the next three years.

WNBA: Tulsa’s Sue Bird became the first player to score 5,000 points and get 2,000 assists in her career. Bird is in 13th place on the league’s all-time scoring list.

SOCCER

RUSSIA: Premier League football team Anzhi Makhachkala called for an end to “bigotry” in domestic football after its fans were abused by CSKA Moscow supporters.

Throughout CSKA’s 1-0 home win over Anzhi on Saturday, CSKA fans shouted derogatory slogans about the Caucasus region. They also displayed a banner featuring an apparent anti-gay slur.

FIFA: Outgoing president Sepp Blatter’s 16-year term as an International Olympic Committee member ended when he did not seek re-election.

CYCLING

TOUR OF UTAH: Kiel Reijnen won a sprint from a small group of riders to win the opening stage at Logan, Utah, while Taylor Phinney finished third in his first race in more than a year after an injury.

The tour began amid controversy after two-time defending champion Tom Danielson withdrew after a positive out-of-competition doping test.
