PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A bill in the General Assembly would allow stores selling alcohol to offer liquor samples to adult customers.
The bill is aimed at letting customers sample brands of vodka, gin and other spirits before making a purchase. Customers could get up to three samples, each a quarter-ounce, at a preplanned tasting.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Timothy Williamson, acknowledged the measure probably won’t pass in the waning days of the legislative session.
A lobbyist for the state’s liquor stores says they’re opposed to it. He says smaller stores especially are concerned they won’t have the manpower and resources to organize tastings.
Some opponents also are concerned about liability in case someone gets into an accident after leaving the store.
