The Portland Pirates not only will be playing for a new NHL affiliate this season.

They’ll be wearing redesigned uniforms.

The Pirates, in their first year as junior partners of the Florida Panthers, unveiled their new home and away jerseys Tuesday afternoon along with an alternate jersey that harkens back to the team’s original black road jersey.

Brad Church, the team’s chief operating officer, said the first major uniform design change in 15 years is an opportunity to create a fresh, clean look for the new affiliation, “while also paying tribute to our roots as an organization.”

In a prepared statement, Church said, “We feel the new game uniforms bring us a more traditional look that our players and fans will be proud of. We’re also excited to bring back our original ‘Swash’ logo and our original uniform design in our alternate jerseys. This is a design that our fans have been asking for, and we are very happy to make this design a reality.”

The Pirates plan to wear their alternate jerseys, which include the original “Swash” logo used on road jerseys from 1993 to 1999, for all five Sunday home games at Cross Insurance Arena during the upcoming season, as well as other select home dates. Unlike uniforms from previous years, this season’s model includes a tie string collar, black shoulder piping and a horizonal belt stripe with small border stripes on the waist and elbows.

The Pirates open the American Hockey League season Oct. 11 in Providence, Rhode Island. Their home opener is scheduled for Oct. 17 against Hershey with the first Sunday home game the following afternoon, also against Hershey.
