Candidate has ‘commitment to excellence’

To the editor,

I am writing to express my support for Tim Spang in his campaign for the RSU 21 school board seat. I have known Tim Spang for nearly 40 years. We both have spent our entire adult lives in the construction industry in Kennebunkport. Tim has demonstrated a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of his business. Tim would bring these same qualities to the school board, where he will work to ensure that our schools provide the best possible education for the children in our community. I am confident he will apply the same level of effort to ensure that our tax dollars are used wisely and effectively.

Tim and his family have contributed immensely to our community, just ask any of the nonprofit organizations they have faithfully supported over the years. Tim possesses a strong commitment to our community’s values, including a belief in the importance of family, diversity of thought and personal responsibility. I believe that these values are essential for our schools to instill in our children, and I am positive that he will work to uphold them in every decision he faces as a member of the school board.

Tim’s vast experience, values, and commitment to excellence make him the ideal candidate to represent our community on the school board. He is exactly what we need at this time and I feel confident in giving him my support.

Candidate has strong New England roots

To the editor,

I’m writing in full support of Susan Holleran as the strongest possible RSU 21 school board candidate for Kennebunkport.

Never has a level head, an open mind and a full heart been as vital for our school board members as they are now. Susan has strong New England roots and is genuinely motivated to give back to our community, as she’s done elsewhere in Maine. She will bring an insightful, thoughtful and non-ideological perspective to the board.

Additionally, there are real concerns about Susan’s opponent, who is both the father and employer of a current RSU 21 school board member. While there are currently no explicit rules prohibiting these types of interrelationships amongst co-serving board members (perhaps something that should be considered), we should think critically about whether we are comfortable with one board member having such strong ties, and potential complicating loyalties, with another board member. Power dynamics are complex and consequential in the best of situations; it does not seem advisable, wise or beneficial to our community for one board member to have potential power over another in the form of direct employment.

Please join me in voting for Susan Holleran on or before June 13.
