Hunt

Carla Hunt is the recipient of Yarmouth’s annual Latchstring Award in recognition of her leadership and service to the town.

Hunt founded the Yarmouth Compassionate Housing Initiative, which helps asylum-seeking families with transitional housing and works with the New Mainers Assistance Program to connect them with services. She is also president of the board of the Maine Initiatives, a philanthropic organization working for racial, social, economic and environmental equity justice in Maine; a board member for the Maine Prison Advocacy Coalition; and an educational facilitator for Wabanaki REACH.

She and her family have lived in Yarmouth since 2009. The 2023 Latchstring Award recognizes all of Hunt’s years of service, as well as her work responding to a racial hate crime impacting Yarmouth’s young BIPOC community and implementing a community response through a restorative justice process, according to the town. She also co-created an alliance of Yarmouth community members committed to identifying and disrupting racism.
