The crowds are thinning. The traffic is dwindling. Kids are back in school, and another summer season has come to a quiet close here in Old Orchard Beach. We at Libby Memorial Library wrapped up the summer reading programs for both kids (with a concert featuring KindKids Music on a blustery Friday) and adults (with an evening soiree), and while it may seem that our little library is headed in the same direction as our little town, the opposite couldn’t be more true. Old Orchard Beach may be settling down for winter with shops closed and quieter streets, but here at Libby Memorial Library, things are still happening.

Every Tuesday, we welcome the Brown Bag Book Bunch and Mahjong players. At 11:30 a.m., join other book aficionados in the community room for a book chat. All are welcome. Feel free to bring a snack. Coffee and tea are available. At 2 p.m., Mahjong players convene in the community room for some tile-laying fun. All ages and ability levels are welcome.

Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. (or at noon on early release days), youngsters are invited to the community room for LEGO club.

Thursdays are great library days for both the young and the youngers. The youngers are welcome to join Ms. Val in the children’s room for Storytime at 11 a.m. Each week features a different theme and take-and-make craft kits are available. For the young (at heart), the Creative Fiber Club meets in the afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. in the adult reading area. All skill levels are welcome, and if you’re fiber curious, stop by and see what’s happening.

In addition to our regular weekly fare, we have some great one day events coming up in September.

Ms. Chandra has been busy with fall planning. Once per month STEAM Saturdays resumed Sept. 9. Word is Ms. Chandra is cooking up some cool science. And speaking of science, University of New England’s Marine Science department will be bringing their Traveling Tide Pool to the library on Sept. 23 at 10:30 a.m.

We’re super excited to welcome Maine author Colin Sargent on Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. for a talk about his new book “Red Hands.” We’ve got two copies in the library, come check one out.

And we will be closing out the month with OOB Fall Fest 2023 on Sept. 30 starting at 10 a.m. in Memorial Park.

Stop by the library and check out the regular happenings, and don’t miss the month-long Art Show featuring work from the talented Saco Bay Artists this month.

Never forget, as our favorite bibliophile aardvark, Arthur Read, always says, “Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card!”

September is also Library Card Sign-up Month. All residents, property owners, and employees of year-round businesses can get a free card. Stop by with proof of residency or employment and a photo ID to sign up.
