New flagpole dedicated at Pearl Harbor observance

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5744 and the Old Berwick Historical Society will gather at 8 a.m. Monday to commemorate the 74th anniversary of Pearl Harbor and to dedicate a new flagpole at the Counting House Museum on Route 4.

The ceremony caps a months-long Rally Round the Flagpole campaign to raise more than $12,000 to erect a 40-foot-tall flagpole that replaces the one the society has maintained since the 1960s.

PORTLAND

Bring Change campaign helps East End school

As part of its Bring Change campaign, TD Bank at Forest Avenue hosted a community coin counting event that raised $2,085.26 for the East End Community School.

Built in 2006, the elementary school serves Portland’s diverse and growing East End neighborhood.

The donation will help to purchase books for the 435-plus students in kindergarten through grade 5.

Donation to Rotary Club to aid homeless veterans

The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club received a $500 donation from Hobbs Funeral Home to assist the state’s homeless veterans in cooperation with the Bureau of Veterans’ Services.

The funding will help with transportation to medical appointments and job interviews, beds, food and gasoline gift cards, numerous household items to start homes for veterans in transition and to raise awareness of the issues and needs of Maine’s homeless veterans.

Sites of Distinction noted for healthy living support

Let’s Go! York County, a program of Partners for Healthier Communities at Southern Maine Health Care, recently recognized 86 Sites of Distinction in York and Oxford counties that supported healthy lifestyles for children and families last year.

The Sites of Distinction included early childhood programs, school lunch programs and out-of-school programs, as well as health care providers.

High school recognizes staff, students and builders

Wells High School hosted its first Breakfast of Champions of the season recently to recognize students, staff and community members whose service and generosity have enriched the student body.

Recognized were staff member Betsy Littlefield and students Gary Andrews, Caleb Chase, Isabelle Creamer, Jennifer Erwin, Caleb Heyland, Kaylee Hollins, Samantha Metzler, Marisa Mizzoni, Katie Reidy and Mitchel Stapleton.

John Fairweather of Shaw Brothers Construction and Steve Saucier of E.S. Boulos Co. also were recognized for their renovation work at the school.
