A special election to fill the state Senate seat vacated by David Dutremble will be held March 29, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
Dutremble, a Democrat, resigned Thursday, saying he needs to spend more time with his family, devote more attention to his career and to focus on his fight with alcohol abuse.
The District 32 Senate seat includes Biddeford, Alfred, Arundel, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman.
Gov. Paul LePage and Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap on Monday signed the proclamation announcing the special election.
Maine’s three political parties – Democrats, Republicans and Green Independents – will hold caucuses to choose candidates to run in the election to serve out the remaining term, which ends in November. Those nominations must be received by the secretary of state by Feb. 16.
Non-party candidates can appear on the ballot if they gather 200 petition signatures from registered voters who live in the district.
