AUGUSTA – The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry has increased state park camping fees for the first time in 14 years, according to a report by WCSH-TV.
Camping reservation fees are increasing to $5 from $2, and actual camping fees are increasing from $3 to $10 at parks across the state, according to the report.
A department spokesman, John Bott, told WCSH that even with the increase, the state still doesn’t cover all of the costs of programs and maintenance of the state parks.
“They’re raises but they’re relatively modest in comparison to what other states have done over a period of time. We feel that right now we’re still in the middle of the pack in terms of the cost of state parks in other states and if you compare us to the private sector, we’re an even better bargain,” said Bott, according to the report.
There are a number of fees the state did not raise, according to WCSH. The Maine State Park Pass is still $70. Senior citizen annual vehicle passes are still
$30, and children under age 5 are still free.
